Former NBA center Enes Freedom says his decision to declare for the WNBA was inspired by comments he heard from league personnel supporting transgender athlete participation in women’s sports.
Speaking about the backlash he has received since announcing his intentions, Freedom explained that a postgame interview sparked his decision.
“I’m on my couch, watching the WNBA and the post-game interviews. One of the players came out and said, ‘I welcome trans athletes on my team any day and every day.’ And even said, ‘There’s no problem with me going against a trans athlete.’”
Freedom continued by pointing to what he believes has been consistent messaging from around the league.
“The WNBA itself, players, and especially the coaches are the ones that have been advocating trans people playing in women’s sports. So I’m not sure why I am getting all this backlash.”
He concluded by saying:
“They are the ones that encouraged me to do this.”
Freedom’s comments have fueled an already heated debate surrounding transgender participation in women’s sports. While some have viewed his announcement as political satire or social commentary, others have criticized it as dismissive of issues facing women’s athletics.
The WNBA’s eligibility rules and policies—not statements from individual players or coaches—ultimately determine who is eligible to enter the league.
